Overview Year 8

Students study the 2014 National Curriculum organised by the Government and mapped against AQA GCSE specification which continues work from Key Stage 2 and Year 7 studies and develops student's practical science skills and their understanding of the three specialisms of Science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Students will be in mixed ability group throughout Year 8.

Students will study the following modules in a rotation basis meaning they may do the modules in a different order from their friends in different groups:

Subject content

The following modules will be taught in Year 7 at different times of the year on a rotation system;

Biology

Organisms

Focus:

Breathing- breathing, gas exchange, drugs, alcohol and smoking

Digestion- nutrients, food tests, unhealthy diet, digestive system, bacteria and enzymes in digestion

Genes

Focus:

Variation- variation, continuous and discontinuous, the change and adapting to change

Inheritance- inheritance, DNA, genetics and genetic modification

Evolution- natural selection, Charles Darwin, extinction and preserving biodiversity

Ecosystem

Focus:

Respiration- aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration, biotechnology

Photosynthesis- photosynthesis, leaves, investigating photosynthesis and plant minerals

Chemistry

Matter

Focus:

The Periodic Table- The periodic table, the elements in group 1, group 7 and group 0

Separation techniques- pure vs impure, solubility, filtration and evaporation, chromatography and distillation

Reaction

Focus:

Metals and non-metals- metals vs non-metals, metals and acids, metals and oxygen, metals and water, metal displacement reactions

Earth

Focus:

Earth’s Structure- the structure of the Earth, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks, the rock cycle

Earth’s Resources- extracting metals and recycling

Physics

Forces

Focus:

Speed- speed and distance/time graphs

Pressure- pressure in gases pressure in liquids and stress on solids

Electromagnets

Focus:

Current- series and parallel circuits, current in series circuits, current in parallel circuits, charging up

Potential Difference- potential difference and resistance

Magnetism- magnetics and magnetic fields

Electromagnets- electromagnets and using electromagnets

Energy

Focus:

Energy Costs- energy in foods, energy in fuels, energy resources, energy and power

Energy transfer- energy transfer, energy adds up, energy dissipation and Sankey diagrams

Work- work, energy and machines

Heating and Cooling- energy and temperature, energy transfer: particles, energy transfer: radiation
